You are welcome to print the Alliance One-Pagers
if you wish to do so. However, the versions available on-line --- even
the Printer-Friendly versions --- really work best as on-line documents;
they will not look as good in a printout as our professionally-designed
versions. (You can easily request one free copy of these documents via our
Contact page.) But if you
still want to print these pages yourself, here are some common printing
issues you may encounter.
- How do I make the links and banners go away?
You're probably trying to print the "normal" version of the pages.
We recommend that, before you print any page, you first click on its Printer
Friendly button, which will reformat the page so that it looks better
as a print-out. Then print that version instead.
- How do I make the page numbers or addresses go away?
Many web browsers automatically print page numbers and site addresses at
the top or bottom of printed pages. Luckily, the browsers will let you turn
off those embellishments if you don't like them.
In Microsoft Internet Explorer, Click File, then Page
Setup.... You can specify the header and footer displayed on each page
in the "Header" and "Footer" boxes. If you want just the contents of the
site, with no embellishments, delete the text in these two boxes. This is
a permanent change, though, so if you want page numbering on any other pages
you print, you will have to restore the text in those boxes to their
original values (usually "&w&bPage &p of &P" and
"&u&b&d", respectively).
In Netscape Navigator, Click File, then Page Setup....
Remove all the check-marks in the Header and Footer boxes. This
is a permanent change, though, so if you want page numbering on any other pages
you print, you will have to restore the checks in those boxes to their
original values.
We do also recommend setting each of the left, right, top, and
bottom margins to 0.5" if you have not done so already. Many browsers waste
otherwise usable paper with big margins, and you can often save a page
every time you print by doing this.
- Why do the pictures come out blurry or blocky?
Your printer may be set to print low-resolution graphics; many
printers can be instructed to print lower-quality graphics. On Windows
computers, you can correct this by going into Start / Settings /
Control Panel / Printers, then right-clicking on your printer,
clicking Properties on the pop-up menu, and then going to the
Graphics tab. On that tab, you can adjust the print quality if your
printer allows it.
On the other hand, if you have a high-quality printer and everything
is working fine, it could just be that the pictures are blurry because the
pictures on the web-site are only 75 dots per inch, and your printer
can probably handle 300 dots per inch or more. If you think that's the
case, and the blurriness bothers you, you should probably get our
professionally-printed copies.
- Why isn't it printing the colored backgrounds of some of the pages
and tables?
You have backgrounds turned off in your web browser, or your web
browser doesn't support backgrounds (many older browsers could not handle
backgrounds correctly). We recommend that you turn on printing of
backgrounds if your web browser supports it. In Internet Explorer,
go to Tools / Internet Options / Advanced / Printing
and check the box next to Print background colors and images. In
Netscape, go to File / Page Setup and check the box next to
Print backgrounds.
- Why is the printed text so small / Why is the printed text so
large?
If you're having this problem with Netscape, you can fix it. Go
to Edit / Preferences / Appearance / Fonts
and pick a larger or smaller font.
If you're having this problem with Internet Explorer, you're out of
luck; IE does not provide any way to change the printed size of the font,
and increasing its size in the display does not necessarily increase its
size in the printed version. You can always get our professionally-printed
copies, which are quite readable.
- I have a laser printer and it only prints part of one page, or
it just produces a "memory error."
Your graphics quality is set too high: The printer must be able to
store the entire page inside it before it can print it, and if your graphics
quality is too high, the whole page won't fit.
On Windows computers, you can fix this by going into Start / Settings /
Control Panel / Printers, then right-clicking on your printer,
clicking Properties on the pop-up menu, and then going to the
Graphics tab. On that tab, you can change the print quality
to a lower setting if your printer allows it.
- My printout has page-breaks in strange places; sometimes pictures
or tables get cut off at the bottom of the page.
There's not much we can do about this. Web browsers are allowed to
break the page wherever they want, and some dumbly break the page in the
middle of a picture or table. If you're experiencing this problem, try
changing the print margins (usually in the same location as the
header/footer information; see "How do I make the page numbers or addresses
go away," above) or try changing the font size (see "Why is
the printed text so small," above). If this really annoys you, you should
get our professionally-printed copies, which not only have page-breaks in
the right locations, but also have full-color and shiny new paper.
